Ruturaj Gaikwad could inform the present selection committee that he can take wickets because he plays with MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to be selected for the Indian team, according to a joke made by former head selector Kris Srikkanth. Despite striking a century against South Africa last month, Gaikwad was left off of the team that will play New Zealand in an upcoming three-match ODI series. This led to the former India opener’s remarks.
Despite not playing a single game in the three-match series against the Proteas, India chose to keep Rishabh Pant in the squad for the encounter against New Zealand. The Maharashtra skipper was shown the door when Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer returned to the setup following their injuries. But according to Srikkanth, Gaikwad ought to have been chosen for the team instead of all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
“Perhaps Ruturaj could claim to have played alongside Dhoni, allowing him to keep it as well.
He could only be chosen for the team in that manner. Since Shreyas Iyer is definite, he ought to have been mentioned. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad ought to have been included in the 15. India Today cited Srikkanth as saying, “Keep him in the 15 instead of having Nitish Kumar Reddy.”
According to the 1983 World Cup champion, Gaikwad’s exclusion demonstrates that an international century does not ensure a spot in the Indian squad for next games. The right-handed batsman will need to go back to playing domestic cricket and keep putting up runs, according to Srikkanth.
It’s implying that there is no chance, even if you score a century. They will forget this century against South Africa, therefore Gaikwad must start over and score a tonne of runs. Srikkanth stated, “He has to score big again in domestic cricket because they dropped him too.”
Everyone has a limited memory, hence they will quickly forget it: Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been kept for the ODIs against New Zealand, will not be in the starting lineup, but he is at least in the overall picture, according to Srikkanth. However, since he is not a member of the team, Gaikwad’s performance versus South Africa may soon be forgotten.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is in the reserves, but he won’t be in the starting eleven either. He will therefore at least be included in the overall scheme of things by being in the 15. However, by making this choice, they have eliminated Ruturaj Gaikwad from both the system and the larger picture. And the public and the selectors themselves will forget about him once you’re taken out of the system itself,” Srikkanth remarked.
It’s incredibly unjust. Performance in an international match is a pointless endeavour. That kind of effortless century is a waste. Everyone has a short memory, thus they will quickly forget it.”
