In case Josh Inglis is injured during the T20 World Cup, Australian top selector George Bailey made a suggestion that Glenn Maxwell might take over as wicketkeeper. At the junior level and in a single game for the Australian team during the 2009 Hong Kong Super Sixes, Maxwell has taken wickets, although he has never done so at the international level.
Bailey stated that he has witnessed Maxwell keep wickets and believes the 37-year-old had innate skills behind the stumps.
“I have witnessed him do it. He did it when he was younger, so he’s a natural. We have participated in World Cups with just one short player in each position. Bailey reportedly told the cricket.au website, “It always feels like you’ve got to give up something.”
“It’s the balance of those sort of day-to-day injuries where a player might just be missing for one (game) versus a more serious injury, and then how long that is, and can you carry someone?” the former captain of Australia enquired.
Australia’s tentative roster for the T20 World Cup, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host from February 7 to March 9, includes Inglis as the only specialist wicketkeeper.

That’s something we haven’t done much of in the past. According to Bailey, “I believe both of those guys possess that skill set, which enables you to clear some space elsewhere so that you can line up specific bowlers and keep Zamps (Zampa) in his space.”
