Damien Martyn in Induced Coma

Meningitis is currently plaguing former Australian top-order batsman Damien Martyn. He’s at a hospital in Queensland. According to reports, Martyn had become unwell on Boxing Day. But according to ESPNcricinfo, the news wasn’t released until the evening of December 30.

Many of Damien Martyn former teammates posted their best wishes for a quick recovery on social media.

“I’m sending @damienmartyn lots of love and prayers. Continue to be a fierce and resilient legend. On X, former Australian captain Darren Lehmann wrote, “Love to the family xxx.”

On behalf of Damien Martyn family, close friend and former wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist posted a statement on social media.

“He is getting the best of treatment and [Martyn’s partner] Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes,” said Gilchrist.

Todd Greenberg, CEO of Cricket Australia, also offered his thoughts on the situation.

The news of Damien’s sickness saddens me. “Everyone at CA and the cricket community at large sends their best wishes to him during this difficult time,” Greenberg said.

Damien Martyn was regarded as one of the most fashionable stroke creators in the game. Martyn scored 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, 13 tonnes, and 23 half-centuries throughout his 67 Test matches for Australia. He played a significant role in the ominous side of Steve Waugh. In the middle of the 2006 Ashes series, Waugh declared his retirement.

Damien Martyn Test career was nearly as successful as his ODI career. In 208 games (182 innings), he amassed 5,346 runs with an average and strike rate of 40.8 and 77.73, respectively. Damien Martyn was instrumental in the 2003 ODI World Cup final, as he scored a quick, undefeated 84-ball 88 while partnering with captain Ricky Ponting to add a 234-run partnership.

After his playing days, Martyn maintained a low profile and briefly worked as a commentator. In the current 2025–26 Ashes series, he recently performed for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“This would be it if the old brigade could play once more. Test match on Boxing Day. He had scrawled on X, “What a cauldron.”
