Travis Head of Australia has publicly defended Jake Weatherald, stating that he had the skills necessary to be successful on the international scene. Only twice in his first eight innings of Test cricket has Weatherald scored more than 20 runs.
In addition to highlighting the difficult aspect of international cricket, Travis Head said the left-handed batsman showed a number of positive traits in his first four Test matches.
“International cricket is quite difficult. It’s common knowledge that the wickets have been difficult in recent years overall. It’s not an excuse, and in my opinion, he is a talented enough cricket player to play internationally. During his first four Tests, I believe he displayed a lot of glimpses. It can be a challenging approach to begin your career abroad.
However, Travis Head said, “I think he’s a good enough player to play international cricket,” according to ESPNcricinfo.
Weatherald’s finest knock came in the first innings of Australia’s day-night Test match in Brisbane, where he scored 72 off 78 in an innings that included 12 fours and a six. As the Australians scored 511 in 117.3 overs, he actually finished as the hosts’ second-highest scorer. But Weatherald’s Test cricket career hasn’t started off well.
In domestic cricket, Head and Jake have been teammates. Together, the two have participated in a number of South Australia games. Since Steve Smith is currently in charge of the red-ball setup, Head serves as the Australian team’s vice captain in the absence of Pat Cummins as their full-time captain.
Australia entered the series with an unbeatable lead after winning the first three games. In the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, they put up a fierce fight against England, but the Ben Stokes-led team won by four wickets. The Sydney Cricket Ground will host the fifth and final Test starting on January 4.
