Brett Lee, a former Australian cricket player, believes that Usman Khawaja will have a unique opportunity to leave the game if he so chooses during the current Ashes 2025–26 match against England in the New Year’s Test. The famous Sydney Cricket Ground, which is also Khawaja’s home ground, will host the series’ fifth and final Test.
For “one of Australia’s greatest batters,” Lee said, Khawaja’s chance to play what might be his last international game in front of his home crowd will be unforgettable. The former bowler went on to praise the Australian batsman for being a role model for the team throughout the years.
That will be up to him, but wouldn’t it be a unique way for him to leave? We’ll wait and see in a few days, but home field offers a chance to win 4-1. He was and has been one of Australia’s best hitters just a few weeks ago,” Lee said, as reported by The Roar.
He was included in the squad because of his accomplishments, not because of his performance. Due to his injury (to) his back, he was excluded. All I can say is that he has been crucial for Australia, but I have no idea what’s going on in his professional cricket life. He’s been a fantastic example for young children growing up,” he continued.
In Australia’s Test matches this year, Khawaja hasn’t been playing at his best.
With the exception of a few innings in which he struck 232 (against Sri Lanka in January) and 82 (against England in December), he has not been able to score significantly. This year, Khawaja’s average has decreased to 36.11 overall. Despite strong suggestions from cricket commentators and fans, he has not disclosed when he would prefer to retire.
In the media lately, there have been a number of conjectures concerning the same subject. Therefore, regardless of the outcome of the game, it will be interesting to watch if the Southpaw retires following the Sydney confrontation.
