Padikkal’s Ton Fuels Karnataka Record Chase

On the first day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Ahmedabad, Karnataka defeated Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy winners Jharkhand by a record run chase led by Devdutt Padikkal‘s outstanding century.

On Wednesday, December 24, Karnataka defeated Jharkhand by chasing down an incredible target of 413 at the Narendra Modi Stadium B Ground, making history.

Vidyadhar Patil helped Karnataka get off to a good start by defeating Utkarsh Singh in the fourth over after winning the toss and choosing to field first against a formidable Jharkhand batting lineup. Before Virat Singh and Kumar Kushagra banded together to turn the tide in favour of Jharkhand, Shikhar Mohan and Shubh Sharma tried to raise the stakes.

They both scored brilliant half-centuries, but Ishan Kishan stole the show with a 125 off just 39 balls. During his lightning-fast knock, the Jharkhand captain struck seven fours and fourteen sixes. In the end, Jharkhand scored 412/9 in their 50 overs.

Before being removed for 54 off 34 balls, Karnataka captain Mayank Agarwal and Devdutt Padikkal shared 114 runs in 12 overs.

Although they were unable to turn their beginnings into significant scores, Karun Nair, Smaran Ravichandran, and Krishnan Shrijith provided Padikkal with strong support.

With ten fours and seven sixes, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batsman hammered 147 off just 118 balls. Abhinav Manohar and Dhruv Prabhakar had brilliant cameos to lead the side to victory after he was removed in the 41st over. With fifteen balls remaining and five wickets, Karnataka prevailed.

In the history of List A, this chase ended up being the second most successful. South Africa’s incredible performance against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, where they chased down a 435-run target, remains the highest.
