Gill T20I Strategy Under Fire

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come under fire from former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif for supporting Shubman Gill in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) without seeing the desired outcomes. During his 15 innings in 2025, Shubman failed to reach a half-century in Twenty20 Internationals.

Kaif even went so far as to say that since Shubman was preferred over others in T20Is, Indian cricket has not advanced. Additionally, he pointed out that instead of Shubman , players like Jitesh Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Yashasvi Jaiswal should have been developed.

They were aware that there were superior players—I’m referring about this particular T20 format. Gill was not the best player. The selectors made a mistake. Indian cricket has regressed as a result of their error. In a video posted to his YouTube account, Kaif said, “You could have invested in Jaiswal, Samson, and Jitesh for two to three months.”

Gill was likely never prepared to be a proper T20I hitter, according to Kaif.

He said that Gill’s investment was a “waste of time” for Indian cricket.

“I think it’s the proper decision to drop Gill. Although it was late, it was appropriate. There was no preparation. In the guise of planning, it has been a waste of time. You supported a player who isn’t yet ready. As selectors, you made the error. Since he failed to score in innings 17–18, there was no other choice. How many more opportunities would you offer him? “I think it’s been a waste of time for Indian cricket and for those players who should have been given the opportunity,” he continued, adding that no one wanted to fire him.

Gill was just left off of India’s 15-man roster for the next T20 World Cup. Gill continues to serve as India’s full-time captain in the other two formats, while Axar Patel was named vice-captain for the major event.

In the most of the T20Is thus far, he has not been able to get going. In T20Is, Gill’s average fell to 24.25. In T20Is in 2025, he might hit at 137.26. Whether Gill returns to T20Is after the World Cup is over is still up in the air.
