Gill Omission Linked to Surya’s Form

Shubman Gill was left out of the Indian team for the T20 World Cup, according to Robin Uthappa, because skipper Suryakumar Yadav wasn’t making many runs and the selectors didn’t want to bring two underperforming players to the major tournament.

Prior to the Asia Cup in September, Gill rejoined India’s T20 team, and since then, he has amassed 291 runs in 15 innings in the shortest format. He batted had a strike rate of 137.26 and averaged 24.25. However, Suryakumar’s T20I performance in 2025 was even worse. This year, the 35-year-old amassed a pitiful average of 13.62 and a strike rate of 123.16 while scoring just 218 runs in 19 innings.

The selecting committee led by Ajit Agarkar, however, chose to keep their commander and dismissed his deputy.

“You can only carry one underperforming player with World Cup teams; you can’t carry more. Uthappa stated in a live session on his YouTube channel, “That’s probably it (he was dropped because SKY isn’t making runs).”

Gill didn’t deserve to be included in India’s T20 World Cup team, according to Uthappa. According to the 2007 T20 World Cup champion, the Punjab batsman has been receiving good deliveries and lacks confidence.

“Given his present form and the fact that he doesn’t appear to be in good shape, I’m not suggesting he [Shubman Gill] deserved to be there. His eyes are visible. Even when he is hitting, there seems to be a lot of bewilderment in his eyes. His deliveries are going well.

Throughout the series, Lungi bowled incredibly well and caused problems for Gill while he was playing.

Uthappa acknowledged that when he saw the side chosen by the selectors, he was taken aback. He did, however, commend Agarkar and company for putting up a formidable team capable of winning the 10th T20 World Cup.

“I was taken aback. I was exhausted after my late-night journey, and I was just spending time with the kids when I returned home. I was like, “What?” when I woke up from my snooze and noticed my phone. I was overjoyed. They chose a really good side, in my opinion. However, I think the way they’ve approached it, and in my opinion, it’s not about dumping people; rather, it’s about how you approach these choices,” he said.

“You shouldn’t have appointed him vice captain in the first place. You already have a vice-captain, so feel free to bring him in. “Don’t announce a vice-captain, or leave that alone,” Uthappa said in closing.
