BCB Acts to Keep Cricket Clean

On Sunday, December 21, the government law enforcement agency, the Criminal Investigation Department, sat with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and its Integrity Unit. Discussing the BCB’s plan of action to ensure that there be no spot-fixing or match-fixing actions during the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) was the primary item on the agenda.

Notably, the BPL 2025–26 will begin play on Friday. In light of the numerous instances of unethical behaviour and malpractice that have previously surrounded the league, the board wishes to make sure that players, teams, and other match officials are subject to tougher oversight. Alex Marshall, a former officer of the ICC anti-corruption section, was also recently appointed by BCB to its Integrity section.

In the meantime, Sibgat Ullah, the chief of CID, disclosed the meeting’s specifics and stated that it will be a long-term and ongoing practice to ensure that the spirit of the game is maintained at the greatest level, particularly when it comes to match and/or spot fixing activities. The head of CID added that they are working to ensure that there are no vulnerabilities that could be taken advantage of.

“The entire BCB team sat with us. We were all there, even their legal representatives.

This process is ongoing. We are collaborating with them. Sibgat Ullah told Cricbuzz, “We are working on these issues a bit with our CID officials who are with the CPC (Cyber Police Centre).”

There are certain international conventions and protocols, but I won’t get into specifics. We’re attempting to adhere to those. I take it that he is from the ICC side? We are looking at where we are, where we want to go, what grey areas exist here, and what the gaps and lapses are—we are attempting to frame this by exchanging opinions with our CPC cyber policing personnel,” he continued.

For supporters, the main goal of playing cricket—or any other sport, for that matter—is to express their love and devotion to the game. In order to ensure that there are no black spots in the centre of the sport that fans adore, the BCB and CID wish to work together.

“And our goal is to bridge those gaps so that our cricket, which is a place of love and emotion, stays somewhat pure and doesn’t have any black stains on it. The CID is collaborating with Alex and the BCB to achieve this goal,” he continued.

The Sylhet Strikers will meet the Rajshahi Titans in the opening game of the Bangladesh Premier League on December 26 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
