Gowtham Announces Retirement

On Monday, December 22, former Indian cricketer Krishnappa Gowtham declared his retirement from all competitions. In front of KSCA President Venkatesh Prasad, Vice President Sujith Somasundar, and Secretary Santosh Menon, he told the media about his choice at a “special announcement press conference” at the Karnataka State Cricket Association’s Media Lounge.

On July 23, 2021, Gowtham, 37, participated in one ODI for India against Sri Lanka.

He just took wicketkeeper Minod Bhanuka’s wicket for his country. He was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for an incredible INR 9.25 crore, making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player ever in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 auction. In the subsequent auction, Avesh Khan broke his record, and last week’s IPL 2026 mini-sale saw Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer follow suit.

Gowtham played for the Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants. In May 2024, the spin-bowling all-rounder played his final IPL match for Lucknow against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He amassed 247 runs with a strike rate of 166.90 in 36 IPL matches. He took 21 wickets with the ball at an economy rate of 8.24 in the meantime.

He took 116 wickets and scored 737 runs in 32 first-class games. In List-A matches, he too had a strong record, collecting 51 wickets and amassing 400 runs in 32 games. He participated in 49 games in the shortest format, scoring 454 runs and taking 32 wickets.

In 2019, while playing for Bellary Tuskers in the Karnataka Premier League, Gowtham put on one of his most noteworthy performances. In that same match, the Bangalore-born player claimed eight wickets for 15 runs while smashing a fierce 134 off 56 balls, including a century off 39 balls.

In the two other game types, Gowtham also played a number of games for India A and nearly made his debut for his country. The all-rounder will be remembered for his competitive spirit and never-say-die mentality, which enabled him to stand out against some of the world’s top players.
