Prithvi Shaw, who was purchased by the Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 75 lakh during the IPL 2026 mini-auction, has gained attention for non-cricket-related reasons. In a recent affidavit presented to a Mumbai court, the opener vehemently contested a plea made by social media celebrity Sapna Gill, characterising it as vexatious, frivolous, and untrue.
Gill’s appeal, which was based on an altercation between the two at a Mumbai pub in 2023, prompted Shaw to produce his affidavit. He claimed Gill was trying to settle a personal grudge and attract excessive attention.
The altercation began as a disagreement about demands for selfies and turned violent. Gill was arrested after a formal complaint was filed. Gill, however, asserted through her attorney, lawyer Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh, that the police neglected to file her cross-complaint against Prithvi Shaw, which contained claims of molestation and outrage at a woman’s modesty.
Prithvi Shaw claims that the plea was made only to harass and defame him by taking use of his public persona and celebrity status.
Later, Gill went to the magistrate’s court in Andheri to ask for instructions to the police to file a formal complaint (FIR) on the basis of her claims. In response, the police told the court that neither Prithvi Shaw nor anybody else present had committed a crime. In spite of this, the magistrate re-examined the case by ordering a new inquiry under Section 202 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
In April 2024, Gill petitioned the Dindoshi Sessions Court for modification because he was unhappy with the order. Prithvi Shaw apparently failed to reply several times before submitting his response on Tuesday, December 16. In his affidavit, he claimed that Gill’s actions were driven by personal hatred and accused her of using the womanhood card as a retaliation for the FIR filed against her.
Prithvi Shaw further asserted that Gill’s plea depended on false, irrelevant, and inadmissible evidence, concealed important facts, and distorted occurrences. Additionally, he accused her of fabricating accusations in an effort to extort money and garner fame.
Deshmukh responded to Shaw’s affidavit by saying that the cricketer’s response lacked any solid proof or justification for his assertions. As of right now, the case has been postponed until March 31, when the court will hear arguments from the attorneys on both sides.
