Due to vertigo-like symptoms, Steve Smith was ruled out of the third Ashes Test on the morning of the match. This led to a late change in Australia’s starting lineup and the recall of Usman Khawaja.
Shortly before play began, Cricket Australia reported that Smith was experiencing nausea and vertigo, which are symptoms he has previously struggled with on and off. The hitter exited the pitch after failing a fitness test the morning of the Adelaide Test and was declared out.
A representative for Cricket Australia stated, “He has been feeling ill over the past few days, with symptoms including nausea and dizziness.” “After a thorough evaluation and close observation, he was almost ready to play. But when the symptoms persisted, it was decided not to move on.
He is receiving treatment for a possible vestibular problem. Steve has occasionally experienced this in the past, and it is being handled appropriately. He is anticipated to be available for Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test.
Despite missing Monday’s training, Smith was back in the nets the next day. He was hit in the groin and didn’t look his best during the practice, so he had to take a long rest.
After winning the toss, Pat Cummins, who had missed the first two Tests, confirmed Smith’s withdrawal and announced Khawaja would take his position at No. 4.
“Steve’s been feeling a bit unwell the last couple of days,” Cummins stated. “He didn’t believe he would get up for this one, but he came and gave it a go this morning. He is therefore leaving for home. We’re fortunate to have someone like Usman who can fill in immediately. Usman will bat fourth.
