For INR 25.20 crore ($2.8 million), the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, making him the most expensive foreign player ever and the third most expensive player ever to be sold at an IPL auction.
With the biggest purse at the start of the auction (INR 64.3 crore), KKR had to defeat the Chennai Super Kings, who had the second-highest purse (INR 43.4 crore). However, the Mumbai Indians were the first to bid for Green, but they were forced to withdraw due to their meagre INR 2.75 crore prize fund. With a purse of INR 16.05 crore, the Rajasthan Royals offered up to INR 13.40 crore before withdrawing, at which point CSK entered the bidding against KKR.
However, Cameron Green will only receive INR 18 crore because the IPL places a maximum pay cap on foreign players at mini-auctions.
Cameron Green is the third most expensive IPL player, after Rishabh Pant (INR 27 crore) and Shreyas Iyer (INR 26.75 crore), and it took him almost ten minutes to make his bid. For player welfare, the BCCI will receive the remaining INR 18 crore (INR 17.2 crore).
Cameron Green and David Miller, who was sold to the Delhi Capitals for his base price of INR 2 crore, were the only two players from the initial group of batters to be sold. Prithvi Shaw, Devon Conway, Jake-Fraser McGurk, and Sarfaraz Khan were not sold.
