Green’s IPL Bowling Clearance Overlooked in Manager Error

Australian allrounder, tipped to be the most expensive buy, will watch the auction.

Cameron Green has stated that he will be able to bowl in the 2026 Indian Premier League. He attributes his manager’s “stuff-up” to the fact that he was listed in Tuesday’s auction as a batter rather than an all-rounder.

The 26-year-old Green played for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2024 and the Mumbai Indians in 2023, but he missed the 2025 season while recovering from back surgery. He returned to international cricket in June as a specialist batsman, but Australia has since given him permission to bowl and is using him as an all-rounder in the current Ashes series.

Green is predicted to get the highest price at Tuesday’s IPL auction in Abu Dhabi; some have even suggested that he might surpass Rishabh Pant’s record of INR 27 crore (about AUD 4.5 million) for the highest bid at the previous year’s auction. With the largest salary available, the Kolkata Knight Riders are the front-runners to sign him.

After enrolling as a hitter, he will be among the first six players up for auction, with a starting price of INR 2 crore (about AUD 333,000). According to Green, his manager “accidentally selected the wrong box” when completing his registration documents.

Green stated, “I’ll be good to bowl,” prior to Australia’s Sunday morning training session in Adelaide.

“There was an issue on my manager’s end; I’m not sure if he would like to hear this. ‘Batter’ was not what he meant to say. I believe he chose the incorrect box by mistake. The way it all turned out was very amusing, but it was a mistake on his part.

Green scored 452 runs, including an undefeated 100 off 47 balls, and claimed six wickets for the Mumbai Indians in his first IPL season in 2023. After completing with 255 runs and 10 wickets from his 13 games, he was momentarily dropped mid-season and traded to RCB the following year.

The night before the third Test, the auction is held, and he indicated that he will be watching it. He expressed excitement in finding out who his new teammates would be, saying, “I’m sure I will be [watching], with a few other guys.” They’re always entertaining to watch. It’s always entertaining to watch since it’s somewhat of a lottery not only for where you might travel but also for who might be on your team.

During their time together at RCB, Green grew close to Will Jacks, who was called up by England for the second Ashes Test in Brisbane. Before the fourth Test, the two will spend time together with their partners in Melbourne.

In light of recent modifications to the board’s memorandum of understanding with the players’ union, Green brushed off a query regarding the possibility of entering into a long-term, multi-year central contract with CA. “I’m not trying to look too far ahead since we try to be quite present. I don’t give that much thought.”

In addition to Jhye Richardson, who is practicing with them in Adelaide, three other players of Australia’s Test team—Steven Smith, Josh Inglis (restricted availability), and Beau Webster—have signed up for the IPL auction. Other Australians who might find buyers include Riley Meredith, Matt Short, and Jake Fraser-McGurk.

Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Matthew Potts, and Josh Tongue are the five Ashes players from England who have signed up for the auction; none of them have ever participated in the IPL. Liam Livingstone, Jordan Cox, and Jonny Bairstow are among England players who are anticipated to draw attention.
