According to former Indian cricket player Sanjay Bangar, the Lucknow Super Giants may be considering Matheesha Pathirana. After playing for CSK for four seasons in a row, Pathirana was let go prior to the auction. The auction is set to happen in Abu Dhabi on December 16.
Bangar emphasised that LSG’s main goal is to improve their fast-bowling unit. After making an impression in his first IPL campaign, he also questioned if Digvesh Rathi would be able to have another successful season with the ball.
“Since that is their primary demand, they can consider obtaining an overseas quick. Pathirana might be great. To strengthen their fast-bowling department, LSG would undoubtedly like to consider hiring someone like a Pathirana. In my opinion, Pathirana might be a good objective for LSG coming into the auction, but they would undoubtedly want to have a backup for Digvesh Rathi from an Indian perspective. “Is Rathi able to duplicate the success of his first season?” Bangar said as he spoke on Star Sports.
Mohammed Shami, a seasoned bowler from Sunrisers Hyderabad, was recently acquired by LSG by taking advantage of the trade window. The team owned by Sanjiv Goenka kept 19 players and has INR 22.95 crore left over. There are still six spots available, four of which are abroad.
In addition to the recently acquired Shami, LSG currently has Avesh Khan, Prince Yadav, Akash Deep, and Mayank Yadav as pacers. Shardul Thakur was traded to the five-time champions, and they also acquired Arjun Tendulkar from the Mumbai Indians. Right now, the bowling attack is well packed.
The Sri Lankan fast has been among the wickets, with the exception of Pathirana’s debut season.
Between 2023 and 2025, he took 55 wickets in three seasons. In the 2025 Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, Pathirana last represented Sri Lanka in competitive cricket.
In their first two IPL seasons (2022 and 2023), LSG made it to the playoffs. Both the 2024 and 2025 seasons ended in seventh place, which was a minor letdown.
