Team India remains extremely concerned about Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav‘s dismal performance in Twenty25 Twenty20 Internationals. The captain only scored five runs from four balls in the second Twenty20 International against South Africa, edging a delivery outside off straight to Quinton de Kock, the wicketkeeper.
Suryakumar appears unconfident, the dismissal followed a concerning pattern, and opposing bowlers appear to have discovered weaknesses that were not apparent in prior years. He battled with fluidity and scored just 12 runs in the first Twenty20 International in Cuttack, underscoring his continued decline in form.
The statistics highlight the downturn. Suryakumar scored 201 runs in 17 innings in 2025 at a strike rate of 126.41 and a meagre average of 14.35, well below his typical level of performance. This year, he has caught three ducks, and his best score to date has been an undefeated 47. The Indian management is growing concerned about his form as the 2026 T20 World Cup approaches in just two months.
Suryakumar has only scored fifty or more in twenty-six innings since the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
This is far below average for a batter who is known for making 360-degree shots. India urgently needs him to reach the 2766 runs he has scored in 90 innings during his T20I career, at a strike rate of above 150. His efforts for India this year have been somewhat lacklustre, even though he had a fantastic IPL 2025 season.
With the major international tournament beginning on February 7, India would be hoping for a change from their captain. India now leads 1-0 in their five-match T20I series against South Africa, but they will have a difficult second game. India lost the Test series versus the Proteas 2-0 earlier in the season, but they recovered to win the ODI series 2-1. In order for India to gain momentum before to the world event, Suryakumar’s return to form will be essential.
