On Tuesday, December 9, during the first Twenty20 International match between India and South Africa at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Jasprit Bumrah made history by taking his 100th wicket for India in the shortest format. The right-arm pacer became the second bowler from India to reach 100 wickets in Twenty20 Internationals. In the Asia Cup 2025 match against Oman, Arshdeep Singh, who also participated in the match, took his 100th T20I wicket.
Regarding Bumrah, he had taken 99 wickets in 80 games when he started the T20I series against South Africa. Bumrah and Arshdeep wrecked havoc with the new ball after India set the Proteas a target of 176 on a hot pitch. The veteran had to wait until the eleventh over to take his 100th wicket, while the latter took two in his opening two overs.
Dewald Brevis was sent packing by Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav made the catch.
He defeated Keshav Maharaj later in his term. The pacer for the Mumbai Indians concluded with impressive numbers of 2/17 in three overs.
After Tim Southee, Lasith Malinga, Shakib Al Hasan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, Bumrah is currently just the fifth bowler in world cricket history to reach 100 wickets in all three international forms. The Ahmedabad native has taken 234 wickets in 52 Test matches, 149 in 89 One-Day Internationals, and 101 in 81 Twenty20 Internationals. He is getting closer to the 107 T20 wickets held by Arshdeep. The left-arm pacer has only played in 69 Twenty20 Internationals thus far, though.
In addition to Bumrah and Arshdeep, the Men in Blue also had two wickets each from Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel. The Proteas were bowled out 74 in their chase for 176 runs, with Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube taking one wicket each.
On Thursday, December 11, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur will host the second Twenty20 International. Later this week, India, who now lead the series 1-0, will look to double their lead.
