South African captain Aiden Markram is cautious about the influence Abhishek Sharma can have at the top of the order, despite the fact that the Indian team has a number of game-changing players. The former praised Abhishek as a game-changer and hoped his bowlers could get rid of him cheaply.
On Tuesday, December 9, the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack will host the opening Twenty20 International of the five-match series between South Africa and India. “It’s definitely a huge wicket for us since I’ve played with Abhi at Sunrisers previously. He’s a terrific person and hits extremely well. Getting him early is a challenge for whoever takes the fresh ball. On the eve of their five-match T20I series opening at the Barabati Stadium, Markram declared, “He is a match-winner, and it’s an important wicket for us.”
Since he has been granted permission to attack the bowlers from ball one, Markram thinks Abhishek is the ideal illustration of a modern-day hitter since he isn’t scared to take chances.
“It’s most likely just the fearlessness and having full permission to attack the game right away. With certain players, you practically want them to take the game on. Markram acknowledged that certain South African players will be hoping to make an impression and land a job at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, which is scheduled for December 16. But he insisted that winning the series is the primary goal and that individual efforts will eventually be recognised.
“There may be a desire to impress among the men participating in the auction. However, that is by no means the primary reason we are here. Individuals inherently gain from a successful team, and that’s the added plus,” Markram emphasised.
Since the World Cup final in June of last year, South Africa has not been playing well in Twenty20 cricket. Despite their bilateral series losses to Australia, Pakistan, India, and the West Indies, Markram stated that the fundamental strategy will not change.
“I suppose there are no other plans. The brand we want to play is T20 cricket, which is an entertaining format. We want the guys to relax, have fun, and show off their best abilities.
