Wolvaardt discussed how South Africa has been playing cricket in a nice way over the last few months. Speaking about making it to the final of three different international competitions since 2023, she added that the team’s goal is to perform well in the summit match the next time they reach that level.
Ahead of their upcoming home series, which begins on Friday, December 5 with the opening Twenty20 International at the Newlands in Cape Town, South Africa Women’s skipper Laura Wolvaardt has lauded the Ireland team and the challenge they present to the Proteas.
The fact that it’s so early is absurd. We seem to have just finished the World Cup, and another one is coming up in a few months. We’ve been having some excellent cricket matches. Of course, we still have three consecutive hurdles to overcome before we reach the last one. To continue making those finals, I believe we’re doing a lot of things correctly.
According to Cricket South Africa, Wolvaardt said, “But yeah, I think just playing a good game once we reach that stage again would be ideal.”
Wolvaardt expressed his respect for Ireland and even mentioned a few players from their lineup and their level of skill. The 26-year-old acknowledged that the hosts will need to put in a lot of effort against an Irish opponent.
They are a positive aspect. They have many excellent players on their own. In a way, Gaby Lewis has performed all around the world. Orla Prendergast and I have also played together. She plays cricket rather well. You can kind of lose the game to players like that. Against some of those major players, our plans will need to be spot on. According to the film I’ve seen, they appear to be a youthful team playing a really daring style of cricket,” she continued.
South Africa and Ireland will play each of their six games at various locations. On December 10, the T20Is will come to an end. Each of the 50-over matches, which are scheduled to be played in Johannesburg, Gqeberha, and East London, will require a few full days of preparation.
