Litton says Bangladesh close to 2026 WC final squad

Following the Bangla Tigers’ 2-1 victory over Ireland in the T20I series, Bangladesh skipper Litton Das praised his team’s on-field performance. The hosts put up an incredible effort in the field during the just finished three-match series, snagging 12 catches.

Litton acknowledged the Tigers’ poor track record in terms of catching and ground fielding.

He did, however, express satisfaction with both the final score and what Bangladesh was able to do on the pitch.

“Normally, this team doesn’t field exceptionally well. But in these three games, we took many brilliant catches. Fielding was definitely a positive. Before the series, we wanted to feel under pressure and convert that pressure into successful games. We couldn’t do it in the first game. But by winning two games back-to-back, we managed to win the series,” said Litton, according to Cricbuzz.

The captain also acknowledged that Bangladesh’s core team for the major competition the following year is essentially established. The wicketkeeper-batter also admitted that his sole concern was a player being hurt before a major competition like the 2026 T20 World Cup.

“Hridoy struggled for big runs for a long time. But in this series, he got big runs. Every player is capable; they just need time. We have tried many things. We filled gaps. Match situations for those who don’t play regularly, that’s very important. I think the core 15 or 16 players are almost ready for the T20 World Cup. My only concern is injury, and a player getting injured before a major tournament is a very bad sign. I pray that doesn’t happen,” he stated.

Bangladesh lost the first match of the T20I series by 39 runs, despite having just defeated the Irish 2-0 in the Tests. Nevertheless, they recovered remarkably well to orchestrate a comeback and ultimately win the series. Mahedi Hasan’s bowling brilliance earned him the title of Player of the Series.

In relation to the 2026 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh has been assigned to Group C, which also includes Italy, Nepal, England, and the West Indies. Matches will take place at eight locations in India and Sri Lanka when the tournament begins on February 7. Notably, after finishing second in the previous edition’s group stage, Bangladesh had lost all of their Super Eight games.
