Madan Lal, the 1983 World Cup winner, lavished Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma with accolades for their recent outstanding ODI cricket exploits. Rohit recorded one fifty and one hundred during the Australian trip, while Kohli made a half-century. In the first ODI against South Africa on Sunday, November 30, the former hammered 135 off 120 balls while the later scored a rapid 57.
Lal claimed that the two Indian cricketing titans should be permitted to make decisions on their own ODI careers. Additionally, he compared the two former captains’ level of hunger and readiness to that of players in their 28s and 30s.
“It is their choice, and no one else’s. Whatever they decide, then. On the sidelines of the Asian Legends League Season 2, Lal was reported as saying, “The way they are playing the ODI series shows they are still very, very fresh and look like they are about 28 or 30 years old.”
Lal also said that Kohli is still in excellent physical condition because he is still sprinting between the wickets and displaying excellent ball-striking abilities.
“It’s good to see how they are going,” he added, adding that Rohit has appeared equally assured and self-assured at the top of the order as Virat Kohli, who is rushing, taking singles, and striking the balls.
The coach and selector are the first to receive criticism: Lal
Drawing on his background as India’s coach and selector, Lal admitted that when a team performs poorly, the people in control are frequently the first to receive criticism. However, he emphasised that scrutiny is only a part of the job.
“The coach and selector are the first to receive criticism. They will receive the criticism because I have been both, so don’t worry. It matters as long as your conscience is correct. Selectors are targeted by critics if the team is performing poorly. Your coach is only as good as your team, therefore it’s also calculated,” he stated.
When Sachin Tendulkar was captain of the Indian squad, Lal, 74, acknowledged that he, too, made mistakes in his role as head coach.
“As a coach, I made mistakes when Sachin was captain, and they are a part of the game,” he continued.
