In terms of his position as India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir is undoubtedly on thin ice following the team’s massive 408-run defeat to South Africa in the second Test on Wednesday, November 26.
India has now suffered five home Test losses under Gambhir, including two whitewashes—one against New Zealand and the other against South Africa.
Other boards may be concerned about it, but the BCCI has supported Gambhir because they don’t want to take a snap decision.
“The BCCI will not make decisions hastily. The group is going through a transformation. We will not make any decisions on coach Gautam Gambhir because the World Cup is quickly approaching and his contract is valid till the 2027 World Cup. Going forward, the BCCI will consult with selectors and team management, but no hasty decisions would be made, a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
Gambhir, who led the Indian team following the T20 World Cup last year, has placed his destiny in the hands of the BCCI, but he made it clear that it was under his leadership that a youthful Indian team achieved success in England.
“The BCCI has the last say. I made this statement at my very first press conference after taking over as head coach. I am not significant; Indian cricket is. In England, I was the same person who won the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy. During the post-game press conference, the head coach stated, “This is a team that is learning.”
India has not played a Test match at home in more than a year. Instead, they will play South Africa in a white-ball series, beginning with the One-Day Internationals (ODI) on Sunday, November 30.
