After India’s poor performances in the current Test series against South Africa, Gautam Gambhir, a former teammate, has been under intense scrutiny. Suresh Raina defended him.
According to the former cricket player for India, Gambhir has put in a lot of effort and assisted the Men in Blue in winning significant competitions like the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Raina stated that while the coach can only offer guidance and assistance, the players must put forth a lot of effort and accomplish their duties on the pitch.
“Gautam Gambhir, or Gauti bhaiya, has put in a lot of effort and is not at all to blame.
The players must perform well and put in a lot of effort. When Raina was introduced as the brand ambassador for the Indian Softball Cricket League, he said, “Under him, we have been doing great in the white-ball format where we just won the ICC Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in Dubai earlier this year.”
The 2011 ODI World Cup winner continued, “The players have to score; the coach can only guide, advise, and give support to the players.”
India lost to New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home last year while Gambhir was their head coach. At home, they are currently facing their first Test series loss in 25 years against South Africa.
Recalling his time spent playing with Gambhir, Raina stated that he had performed admirably for the country. According to the cricket player-turned-expert, the players ought to discuss their problems with Gambhir.
If the players are having any problems, they need to let the coach know about it. If the players do well, the coach will also receive praise. However, he stated that the coach shouldn’t be fired if the squad is struggling.
“Gautam bhaiya is a huge fan of the Indian cricket team, and I have played and won the World Cup with him. Therefore, he has done a great job for the nation, and it is the players’ duty to perform well,” he continued.
