Shamsi Withdrawal Forces Squad Change

Tabraiz Shamsi, a wristspinner for MI Cape Town (MICT) and South Africa, has withdrawn from the forthcoming SA20 season due to personal issues. Thomas Kaber, an all-rounder who also bowls left-arm wristspin, has taken his place.

For the fourth season, MICT’s pace attack consists of Trent Boult, Dwaine Pretorius, Corbin Bosch, and Kagiso Rabada, while its spin-bowling squad now consists of Rashid Khan, George Linde, Dane Piedt, and Kaber. After playing eight games in 2023–24 and one in MICT’s 2024–25 championship campaign, Kaber rejoins the team he played for the previous two seasons.

Kaber has bowled in seven SA20 innings overall, claiming 10 wickets at an economy rate of 8.05 and an average of 16.60. In his four innings at bat, he has amassed 34 runs, including three undefeated knocks. Kaber has taken seven wickets in six games for the Warriors in the current CSA T20 Challenge at an average of 17.42 and an economy of 6.31.

Shamsi was scheduled to play his first season with MICT after being purchased by the team at the September auction for R500,000, or roughly US$29,000. He played for the Paarl Royals the first two seasons and the Johannesburg Super Kings the previous season.

Shamsi is presently a member of the Abu Dhabi T10 team Northern Warriors.

He chose not to play in the ODI series against India earlier this year after opting out of a Cricket South Africa (CSA) national contract. The 2024 T20 World Cup was his final T20I appearance.

The season will begin on December 26 when the defending champions MICT play the Super Giants of Durban in Cape Town. The team’s home field, Newlands, will host the summit match on January 25. The first two seasons were won by Sunrisers Eastern Cape in 2023 and 2024, and a new winner is anticipated in the fourth season.
