Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, now thinks he has a 50% chance of making it back for the second Test at the Gabba after fearing he may miss the entire Ashes series due to a back ailment. Since Australia’s 3-0 Test series whitewash of the West Indies in July, the fast bowler has been sidelined. He was unable to play in the Ashes opener in Perth due to a stress issue in his lower back.
In order to demonstrate his fitness before the second Test, which is set to start in Brisbane on December 4, the Pat Cummins has started bowling in the nets again. The Australian quick will face a final evaluation by taking a few more bowling sessions to determine his match-readiness, so he is not in a rush to return.
“It feels fantastic. I’ve had a few successful sessions in Perth this week, so I’m planning to have a big day where I bowl about ten overs, followed by a few slower days before continuing. It’s pulling up fairly well and on course. I have a 50% probability of making it to the following game. After a few more bowls, it can be up to two weeks before the next (Test).
Pat Cummins told Kayo Sports, “I’m pretty hopeful and it’s probably better than it was a few weeks ago.”
Because back injuries are delicate, Pat Cummins’ recuperation has been gradual and well-managed. He once worried that he wouldn’t participate in the Ashes at all. He stated that after consulting with Australia’s physiotherapists, medical personnel, and selectors, a final decision regarding his availability for the Gabba Test will be made. Pat Cummins, though, seems to have a good chance of being deemed fit for the game if his previous net sessions in Perth are any guide.
“I think there were moments when I doubted I would play a game. It has been difficult. All you want is to be part of it. You wish you were out there while the entire cricketing world watches. There are a few factors at play, and because I’m obviously not very familiar with cricket, you want to gain a sense of the situation, look at the wicket, and decide how you believe the game might go. No one will ever put me in that situation if I don’t want to play,” Pat Cummins stated.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after winning the first Test on the second day of play. The match in Brisbane will be a Pink-Ball match.
