Following South Africa’s 30-run victory in the opening Test match in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16, former captain Sourav Ganguly urged Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir to reinstate Shami. According to the head of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Gambhir should trust the seasoned pace duo of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah.
Shami last played for India in the red-ball format against Australia in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. Although he has represented the Men in Blue in both white-ball formats this season, a Test comeback has yet to materialise. In the current Ranji Trophy, the right-arm seamer has been playing effectively for Bengal, taking 18 wickets in four games thus far.
“Gautam is someone I really like; he performed brilliantly in the 2011 and T20 World Cups. He needs to play on decent surfaces in India, but he will be around for a while.
“He needs to believe in Bumrah, Siraj, and Shami,” Ganguly told Sports Tak.
“I believe Shami is deserving of a spot on this Test squad. He said, “Shami and the spinners will win Tests for him.”
Ganguly: India Must Play On Good Tracks
In order for India’s hitters to score runs, as they did at the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy earlier this year, Ganguly hoped that they would play on good pitches. According to him, the team captained by Shubman Gill ought to aim to win Test matches in five days rather than three.
“Achieve nice wickets. Gautam Gambhir is probably listening. He must remove the wicket from the match. Because he won’t win Test matches if his hitters aren’t scoring 350–400. Their batters put runs on the board, which is why they triumphed in England. He needs to take good wickets. And have faith in his people. and win five days of tests. “Not in three days,” Ganguly said.
