Gambhir Defends Kolkata Wicket: ‘No Demons There’

When analysing India’s recent 30-run loss to South Africa in the opening Test of the two-match series, head coach Gautam Gambhir was blunt. At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Proteas won the series opener by 30 runs after the hosts were dismissed for 93 on the third day of their run-chase of 124.

The ‘proper temperament’ is crucial while batting in difficult conditions, such as those in Kolkata, as Gambhir noted.

Additionally, he admitted that the pitch was not the kind of surface that made batting difficult and therefore the pitch should not be held responsible.

“I thought that 123 (124) was definitely attainable.” To score runs, you must have the correct attitude, which is what occurs when you don’t play properly. We requested this pitch, and this is what we received. You ought to be able to play spin. Pacers took most of the wickets,” Gambhir stated during the news conference held after the game.

“We are pleased with what we received, and this is what we requested. We were searching for a pitch just like this. The curator was really beneficial. This is what happens if you don’t play well. The wicket wasn’t unplayable. Your attitude and technique were put to the test on that wicket. You can score on such wickets if you have a strong defence,” Gambhir continued.

Gambhir added that while examining a certain set of games, it is not appropriate to compare other eras. He gave an update on Rishabh Pant as well, expressing confidence that the batsman-wicketkeeper would continue to contribute runs.

Periods shouldn’t be compared. There are youthful players in this changing room. Mental toughness is necessary for test cricket. It’s more than just skill. Tactically, I believe we were perfect. In reference to Rishabh Pant, he is a renowned batter. It has been a while since he played (Tests). He would be all right going forward,” he continued.

Simon Harmer’s eight-wicket run in Kolkata (4/30 and 4/21) earned him the Player of the Match title. In their second innings, up to six Indian players scored in the single digits. During the run-chase, only Axar Patel and Washington Sundar scored more than 20 runs. The lowest target ever successfully defended in Indian Test matches was 124.

The Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati is the venue for the second Test. On Saturday, November 22, it will start. Under Gambhir’s leadership, the hosts will be looking to improve their batting performance in order to save the series and avoid losing another home Test series.
