During his time as the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach, former South African fast bowling great Dale Steyn has disclosed that he encouraged the team’s management to sign Mohammed Shami on several occasions. Working with SRH from 2021 to 2024, Steyn noted those years coincided with Shami’s zenith, which was exemplified by his Purple Cap-winning IPL 2023 campaign.
At the super auction, SRH had already paid INR 10 crore for Shami, but the experienced pacer’s inconsistency and fitness problems hindered his ability to contribute to the team. In the 2025 season, Shami had a poor showing, taking just six wickets in nine games, which sparked rumours about his future. He might be released or traded to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) before the auction, according to reports.
Although he recognised that fitness issues might affect retention decisions, Steyn stated that he would be disappointed to see SRH let go of such a talented bowler.
But he emphasised that an unquestionably healthy and productive Shami would join any IPL club. The 35-year-old has taken 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy games lately, showing that he is in form.
“I begged that we somehow acquire Mohammed Shami when I was the Sunrisers’ bowling coach. And they captured him the instant I was absent. Therefore, I would be sad if you lost him. In my opinion, bowlers’ form and level of fitness are crucial in the IPL. According to Steyn on Star Sports, “you want bowlers to be fit.”
“If Shami is healthy and productive, he can contribute to any squad. You want them to be fire. However, if he has been having some trouble and has taken a few months off, some organisations may say, “You know what, we would like to bring in other players right now because they are healthy.” They’re firing, and you would have served us well for a year and a half, but not at this time. Therefore, that release may occur. However, when I was there three years ago, I begged for him,” he continued.
