Harmanpreet Kaur, the world cup-winning captain, recently declared which of the two Indian cricketing greats, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, she prefers. The crowd cheered loudly when she selected Dhoni over Kohli.
At a function held at Velammal Nexus School, Harmanpreet Kaur conveyed his profound respect for Dhoni’s composed leadership and his remarkable contribution to Indian cricket. She emphasised that Dhoni’s reputation as a cricket great is cemented by the fact that he is still one of the few captains in history to have won every major ICC trophy.
She cited Dhoni’s calm demeanour, remarkable decision-making under duress, and the confidence he instilled in the team as reasons for her preference. These attributes have established a standard for leadership in Indian cricket, she said.
Speaking to the pupils, Harmanpreet Kaur highlighted the value of diligence, self-control, and reliability.
Dhoni’s impact on Indian cricket goes beyond statistics; his legacy will continue to motivate future generations. Kaur emphasised how players of all genders have found inspiration in his achievements on the international scene, which include the 2011 ICC World Cup and numerous other ICC championships. She also out that Dhoni’s influence goes much beyond his accomplishments, as evidenced by the great regard he is accorded by contemporary cricket players who carry on the traditions he laid.
She also commended Kohli for his unparalleled enthusiasm and zeal on the pitch. Although a generation of cricket players have been inspired by Kohli’s aggressive and passionate style, Harmanpreet Kaur admitted that Dhoni’s cool-headed and collected manner had a greater impact on her personally. She pointed out that the contrast represents two leadership ideologies that are clearly different but equally effective.
After leading the team to their first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup victory in 2025, the India women’s captain also gave some reflections on her own cricketing career. She named former India opener Virender Sehwag as one of her greatest influences and acknowledged that a number of veteran players had influenced her career. She emphasised that there are more options than ever before and urged young cricket players, particularly aspirant ladies, to follow their goals with faith and commitment.
It’s encouraging to observe that people no longer compare men’s and women’s cricket; instead, they just discuss sport. Stadiums are packed, everyone is having fun, and it’s a proud time,” Harmanpreet Kaur said during the event.
