Hayden Criticises GT’s Middle Order, Calls for Rebuild

The Gujarat Titans’ (GT) primary issue, according to former Australian batsman Matthew Hayden, is their brittle middle order and over-reliance on their top-order players. During the IPL 2025 season, Hayden pointed out that GT’s excessive reliance on openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill was a serious flaw.

He praised their potent top order but pointed out that only Jos Buttler was dependable in the middle order, which struggled to deliver. In order to regain equilibrium, Hayden recommended that GT concentrate on reassembling their middle order and release underperforming players in the next mini-auction.

Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill, who were the highest-scoring opening duo the previous season, make up the Gujarat Titans’ outstanding top order. Their middle order, however, suffered greatly; only Jos Buttler was able to play consistently. Their over-reliance on openers turned out to be a glaring flaw.

According to Hayden in JioHotstar, GT should release underperforming players and those who were not given the chance to successfully rebuild their middle order during the mini-auction.

With nine victories in 14 games, GT finished third in the league stage and advanced to the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. They had a successful IPL 2025 campaign. But their adventure came to an end when they lost to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator. The talent of GT’s youthful Indian openers, who continuously produced solid beginnings throughout the competition, was a major factor in their win.

With 759 runs, Sudharsan topped the run statistics and was the most impressive player. Gill, the captain, came in second with 650 runs. Buttler contributed significantly as well, amassing 538 runs in the season. With bowler Prasidh Krishna taking 25 wickets in 15 games and winning the Purple Cap, GT once again made an impression on the bowling front. Sai Kishore, a left-arm spinner who took 19 wickets in 15 games, also put up strong performances.

In order to have a more balanced roster going into the 2026 Indian Premier League, GT is anticipated to clear out financial space by cutting underperforming players and concentrating on bolstering their middle order.
