Ollie Pope will bat at No. 3 in the forthcoming Ashes Down Under, according to hints made by Marcus Trescothick, England’s assistant coach and former cricket player. Earlier this year, Pope last played for England in their five-match Test series against India. The former left-handed batter hinted at Pope keeping the position, but he did not take names.
Trescothick also discussed how England prefers to support their players and is against making too many changes.
“I’m assuming that this will be the same kind of number three that we’ve had for a while. All I can say is that we are a pretty consistent team in our endeavors. Everyone gets a chance to make a claim, I suppose. The BBC quoted Trescothick as stating, “As I mentioned, we’ve been very consistent with our team selection, and it’s been very level.”
Additionally, he stated that the team for the Ashes is likely to be the same as the one used against India at home.
“We haven’t actually cut and changed all that much, except from the occasional accident. Because someone puts their hand up by taking five wickets or reaching 150, there won’t be a significant shift before an Ashes series begins. The team has been in place for a while for a reason, so you are more at ease and self-assured when it comes to major series,” he continued.
Pope most recently played red-ball for Surrey in the County Championship’s Division One in September. Over the course of four innings, his scores were 50, 78, 11, and 41.
The 2010–11 season was the last time England triumphed in a Test series in Australia. This time, they’ll try to break the jinx and go for the urn. The series is expected to be intense because of the team’s overall strength.
