No one would be spared if the investigative panel proves the claims against them, the BCB president insisted. According to Aminul Islam, head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, misbehavior involving female cricket players is strictly prohibited.
During the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand, Jahanara Alam accused former national fast bowler Manjurul Alam of sexually assaulting her, shocking the entire nation.
After she came forward, a number of other former female cricket players also spoke out, which led the BCB to establish an inquiry committee to look into the claims of wrongdoing.
The committee’s convener is retired justice Tariq ul Hakim of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh’s Appellate Division. Its members include Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and Rubaba Dowla, a recently appointed BCB director.
“I’m going to answer your question with zero tolerance. In response to a query about the board’s position, Aminul said, “Thank you,” adding that they should allow the investigative panel time to finish and provide their results.
According to information obtained by Jahanara, the BCB chose to remove four of its personnel involved in women’s cricket on special duty (OSD) due to claims of harassment. These officials include manager S M Golam Faiyaz, physio Suraiya Akter, coach Mahmud Emon, and official Sarfaraz Babu.
Facilities committee director Shanian Taneem, who sat next to Aminul, maintained that there is no way to escape punishment for wrongdoing, regardless of whether the offender is a director or an employee.
“Well, there’s an inquiry committee that has to make choices, whether it’s a director or an employee. As a director of the cricket board or even as president, we have no authority to make choices on our own, thus we are reliant on the committee’s decision because it has already been established,” Shanian stated.
“If the inquiry committee determines tomorrow that four employees require special duty (OSD), we will implement that decision. They have the final say, though, because you mostly want to hear about the directors because that’s what’s suggested. Everyone involved will be covered by the investigation they carry out. “They’re not going to spare any director,” he remarked.
They would conduct a thorough investigation against me, for instance, if the accusations were made against me. If the investigators suggested that I be removed, I would also have to resign. The president, a board director, or any employee will not be tolerated in any way,” he declared.
“We will not put up with the accusations if they are accurate. However, individuals may suffer if the accusations prove to be untrue because these investigations include their private lives. Therefore, he advised giving them at least five to seven days.
Since anyone can make an accusation, you should have the right to know the outcome if the charge were made against you today, regardless of whether you were the one who made it or not. In addition, people who are accused have wives, kids, and families, whether that is true or not. Therefore, they also have a right to five or seven days to show themselves. He stated, “I think they ought to be given that opportunity.”
“These regulations also apply to the nation’s prime minister. Just regular directors, that’s all. If it turns out that I harassed someone, I’m simply a regular director and am subject to the law. Therefore, the guilty will be penalized if the inquiry confirms the claims. “It’s about the principle, not about you or me,” he said.
