Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody is expected to be named the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) global director of cricket. He will oversee the LSG in the IPL, the Durban Super Giants in the SA20, and the Manchester-based team in the Hundred. He will work alongside Kane Williamson, who was recently named the strategic advisor, and Justin Langer, a former teammate of Australia and Western Australia who is still the head coach.
Having managed franchise and international teams for more than 20 years, Tom Moody, who turned 60 in October, is one of the game’s most renowned coaches. In the ILT20, he had previously played a similar role with Desert Vipers, where he enjoyed a successful tenure that saw him finish second in 2023 and 2025.
As head coach, Tom Moody led the Oval Invincibles to the Hundred title for the third consecutive year earlier this summer in England.
Both Surrey and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the owners of the Mumbai Indians, who earlier this year purchased a 49% share in the Invincibles, reportedly wanted to keep Tom Moody on board. It is believed, meanwhile, that Moody chose to accept the offer from LSG since it offered him a more significant role.
Tom Moody hiring has not yet been made public by LSG, which is controlled by RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG). His contract’s duration could not be verified.
For the first time since leaving Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during IPL 2022, Moody will be making his IPL comeback. It was Moody’s second term as SRH’s coach, following a very successful first spell from 2013 to 2019 that included a 2016 championship victory. In 2021, he rejoined the team as director of cricket, but when fellow Australian Trevor Bayliss resigned, he was promoted to head coach the next season.
Moody will replace former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan at LSG in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Despite having been hired by LSG for two years, Zaheer only stayed for one season before leaving the team in September.
LSG failed not make it to the knockout stages in the previous two IPL seasons, despite making the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. They have six victories from 14 games in 2025, which put them in seventh place. The two teams had somewhat different seasons; LSG won five of their first eight games but only one of their final six. They only won two of the seven games they played at Ekana Stadium, their home field.
