Rahul Dravid, the former head coach of the Rajasthan Royals, believes that Vaibhav Suryavanshi and other extraordinary players cannot be coached. In his first IPL season, the 14-year-old batsman scored 252 runs with a strike rate of 206.5 in seven games.
Rahul Dravid emphasized the importance of coaching in developing superstars like Suryavanshi.
According to him, the best help that can be given is to make sure that players that resemble Suryavanshi have a solid foundation.
It isn’t the ability. He is skilled. It’s the attitude, though. That kind of thinking is absolutely impossible to teach. Someone with that mentality cannot be coached. You simply need to own it and manage it. You can’t stop it, for sure. In an interview with Breakfast with Champions, Rahul Dravid said, “As a coach, it’s not so much about teaching him but giving him the platform and the freedom to express himself.”
Dravid, who recently left RR after only one season as head coach, said that the best course of action would be to set up some difficult situations and watch how Suryavanshi handles them.
“Creating a specific set of challenges in the nets, or generating various circumstances, which subsequently permit or feed him things that he may not be proficient at.” And then letting him figure out how he does it, letting him come up with his own special method. That would be an excellent method. It’s a self-discovery process. Don’t interfere with the process,” he continued.
In their most recent white-ball series against England Under-19 and Australia Under-19, Suryavanshi, who gained notoriety for his triple-century (unbeaten 332) in the Randhir Verma Tournament, has excelled for India Under-19.
The child is presently competing in the 2025–2026 Ranji Trophy on behalf of Bihar. He was chosen to be the state team’s vice-captain. One of the most promising players to play in the 50-over Under-19 World Cup the next year is expected to be Suryavanshi.
