Shardul Thakur, 34, is hopeful about a comeback despite the fact that he may be lower in India’s current rankings as the team searches for a seam-bowling all-rounder who can bat at No. 8 in ODIs.
On Tuesday, October 28, Shardul Thakur declared his intention to regain that position and that he hopes to be included in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad.
Based on India’s most recent ODI series against Australia, Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy seem to be the front-runners for the seam-bowling all-rounder spot. But with over a year and a half left before the 2027 World Cup, Shardul Thakur thinks he has plenty of time to push his way back into the picture.
“I need to keep doing well so that I can eventually rejoin the Indian squad. I will be selected more easily if I perform well. The ODI World Cup in South Africa may have a spot available at number 8 for bowling all-rounders. Naturally, I’m keeping an eye on that location. I’m prepared to play international cricket as soon as I get picked. “I am prepared to play international cricket if asked to do so tomorrow,” Thakur stated following Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match against Chhattisgarh ending in a tie at the MCA Ground, BKC.
Though he has subsequently been ignored in the white-ball formats, Thakur last played in an ODI for India at the 2023 World Cup on home turf. Selectors chose Reddy above him for the home series against the West Indies, despite the fact that he was included in the Test squad for the most recent England tour.
Regarding the domestic scene, Shardul Thakur is now concentrating on Mumbai’s forthcoming matchup with Rajasthan, which begins in Jaipur on November 1. With his presence giving Mumbai’s top order a major boost, the all-rounder expressed hope about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s potential return to the team. Jaiswal could provide steadiness as the team’s openers have struggled in the opening two games.
“He has scored high scores and has never let me down. As soon as he enters the game, he makes sure to score a hundred runs. That’s really good,” Shardul Thakur replied.
