Shubman Gill’s Struggle Leads to Unwanted Record

Shubman Gill finished the three games against Australia with scores of 10, 9, and 24, therefore he didn’t have a memorable batting series.

Because of his scores, Shubman Gill average was a pitiful 14.33. Compared to Sourav Ganguly in 2001 (18.60) and MS Dhoni in 2016, his ODI captaincy average versus Australia is much lower (17.20). It is now the lowest average ever recorded by an Indian ODI captain during a series against the Australians.

The issue of Shubman Gill white-ball form was addressed following the third game of the most recent ODI series against Australia.

Lean patches are common for batters, he said, and he wasn’t concerned about his batting technique.

Shubman Gill, meanwhile, has recently been playing excellent red-ball cricket. With 754 runs in 10 innings, he became the leading scorer throughout the England five-test tour. He subsequently got a hundred (129*) and a fifty (50) in the two-match series at home against the West Indies.

Nevertheless, the 26-year-old’s Asia Cup 2025 performance was subpar. Recalled to the Indian T20I team, he was named vice-captain of the team captained by Suryakumar Yadav. Abhishek Sharma, his opening partner, was the tournament’s highlight, while Gill was only able to score 127 runs in seven games.

Shubman Gill will now be Suryakumar’s backup captain for India’s five-match Twenty20 International series against Australia. Canberra is set to host the 20-over leg of the tournament starting on October 29.

India has a lot planned for the upcoming months. Following the conclusion of their white-ball series against Australia on November 8, they will welcome South Africa for an all-format series that includes three ODIs, five T20Is, and two Test matches. This will be followed by an eight-match series against New Zealand at home, which will include three ODIs and five T20Is.
