Shreyas Iyer recovering well after injury

After making a spectacular catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the third ODI against Australia, Shreyas Iyer suffered a rib cage injury that will keep him out of play for at least three weeks. The team’s physiotherapist, Kamlesh Jain, had to remove him from the pitch.

As he limped away, Shreyas Iyer appeared gravely hurt.

In a press release, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated that the Indian ODI vice-captain has been admitted to the hospital for additional testing and assessment of the injury. Shreyas Iyer jumped full stretch to grab onto a skier off Carey’s bat after tracking back from backward point in the 34th over.

The media was informed about Shreyas Iyer illness by a source close to the development, who stated that the first diagnosis was that he had a “jerk” ailment. Regarding Shreyas Iyer involvement in the forthcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, he added that he might be out of time.

As the game was happening, Shreyas was brought to the hospital for scans. He will need to be out of commission for at least three weeks due to a jerk, according to the first diagnosis. On his return, he will have to report to the Center of Excellence. One must wait for more information before determining whether he will need longer time to heal.

It could take longer if the fracture is a hairline fracture. The time is too soon to tell. “There is a possibility that it could be touch-and-go before November 30 (the start date of the ODIs against South Africa) if it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play),” the source said, as reported by India Today.

Speaking of Iyer’s series, he scored 61 in the second ODI and 11 in the first. With 73 ODIs played, Iyer is 83 runs short of reaching the 3000-run milestone. Iyer last represented India in a Test match in February 2024 and a Twenty20 International in December 2023, for those who are unaware.

At the Sydney Cricket Ground, the Men in Blue prevailed by nine wickets with 69 balls remaining in the dead rubber. The Player of the Series and Player of the Match accolades were given to Rohit Sharma for his efforts. A five-match Twenty20 International series between India and the hosts is now planned to start on Wednesday, October 29.
