Before Australia’s women’s team played South Africa at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, two of their players were brutally molested. This was denounced by Devajit Saikia, secretary of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
The incident happened on Thursday, October 23, while the players were making their way to a cafe, according to Cricket Australia (CA). An individual sitting on a motorcycle “touched inappropriately” two Australian athletes.
After that, the police nabbed the offender, Aqeel Khan. He is from Khajrana, but he currently lives in Azad Nagar. He was formerly a criminal.
An “isolated incident” will be handled with a zero-tolerance approach, according to Saikia’s statement. He added that in order to make sure that similar instances don’t happen again, the BCCI will investigate strengthening security measures if necessary.
This is a singular and extremely unfortunate situation. India is well-known for its friendliness, hospitality, and consideration for all visitors. We continue to have a zero tolerance policy for such behavior. We are grateful for the Madhya Pradesh Police’s prompt and efficient response in capturing the suspect. The legal system will take its time to see that justice is done. Additionally, in order to prevent such occurrences from happening again, we will review and, if needed, tighten our current safety procedures,” Saikia stated in the statement.
