Following his appointment by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as the new Director of International Cricket Operations, Test captain Shan Masood will now be juggling two roles. In the recent two-match Test series against South Africa, which concluded in a 1-1 tie, he captained Pakistan.
According to a PCB source on Friday, the board unanimously agreed that Shan Masood is the most qualified individual to head the department of international cricket affairs. It is an uncommon event because so few people have been assigned to an administrator’s position while playing for their country.
During a dinner meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was visited on Friday by the Pakistani team and the South African visiting side, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi made the announcement, according to Pakistan cricket sources.
Usman Wahla held the position before to his recent suspension for managing the Handshakegate improperly during India vs. Pakistan’s Asia Cup league match in Dubai last month. Although he was later allowed to return, his second innings is about to finish too soon. According to reports, he will be moved to another department if Shan Masood was appointed, most likely the Pakistan Super League.
With a focus on managing the Pakistani squad and overseeing international cricket activities, this is a multifaceted leadership position. In their most current job posting, PCB said that the incumbent’s primary responsibilities would be to plan, coordinate, carry out, and supervise overseas travels.
According to reports, Misbah ul Haq, the former captain of Pakistan, was the most likely candidate to fill the role.
Shan Masood is the final target, though.
2013 saw the left-handed batter’s debut for his country. 44 Test matches, 9 ODIs, and 19 T20Is have been played by him. Although he is not taken into consideration for white-ball formats, the PCB has expressed confidence in him for Test matches.
Pakistan will now play three Twenty20 Internationals against the Proteas after the Test series ended in a draw. An ODI series consisting of three matches concludes South Africa’s visit of Pakistan.
