Following a brief hiatus in New York after his time in The Hundred, Smith returned to Sydney and quickly re-established his groove. In the first Test, which begins in Perth on November 21, Smith will captain Australia while Pat Cummins battles to recover from a back injury.
In contrast to previous years, Steve Smith has been unconventional in his Ashes preparation. The right-handed hitter is putting more emphasis on mental toughness than on overpracticing. Smith took on bowlers from New South Wales at Cricket Central after enduring throwdowns on the way back from New York. Before the Ashes, Steve Smith will play in two Sheffield Shield matches against Victoria and Queensland, but he already feels like he is at his best.
