Suryakumar Yadav, the Indian T20I skipper who guided the side to the Asia Cup 2025 championship in September, is still not eligible to play in Test and ODI cricket. Suryakumar Yadav has a poor record in the other two formats, while being considered one of the top batters in the shortest format. Despite only managing eight runs in his lone Test match, he has played in 37 ODIs and scored 773 runs at an average of 25.76.
Since Rohit Sharma left, Shubman Gill has been given consideration for a spot in the team across formats, which Suryakumar Yadav feels was lost due to his inconsistent play in longer formats. In May of this year, before the England series, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket, and Gill was later named the format’s captain. The 26-year-old has also been selected the ODI captain for the Men in Blue’s multi-format series against Australia.
“My ODI stats are really bad… Apne numbers itne bekaar hain ODI mein!” I have so many opportunities because of them. I was able to participate in 25-30 (sp. 37) games. And if, even after this, I am still unable to seize a chance, then something is undoubtedly wrong,” Suryakumar Yadav told News24 Sports, as reported by NDTV.
In my opinion, I could have also won the ODI captaincy if I had performed well in the ODI format, similar to how T20I captaincy is currently being awarded. Now I’m considering it. I hadn’t given it much thought before. because there are thirty more overs in the format. The ball has the same color. It’s nearly identical to the jersey. I will attempt it even now. I’ll put everything into it. “I’ve always had a dream,” he continued.
Beginning on October 19, India will play Australia in a three-match ODI series. In the rain-shortened first game, the Men in Blue had a difficult time and only managed a respectable batting total.
The five-match T20I series will come after the ODI series, with Gill acting as Suryakumar Yadav deputy captain.
“We talk a lot about this when we’re at home. I told my wife that you never knew if I had performed well in ODI cricket. Who will be in charge when Rohit bhai (brother) steps down as ODI captain? If you’re doing well, you might be a strong candidate. However, the possibility in ODI cricket hasn’t materialized yet,” Suryakumar Yadav stated.
