Jonathan Trott Likely to Quit as Afghanistan Coach

Jonathan Trott, the head coach of Afghanistan, is expected to leave the team following the 2026 T20 World Cup. In July 2022, Trott was appointed head coach of Afghanistan. In December 2024, he received a contract extension following a successful year.

After an almost four-year tenure, Trott is expected to leave the Afghanistan camp at the end of the major event, which will take place in India and Sri Lanka next year, according to The Cricketer.

In 2022, Jonathan Trott was first hired by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for a period of 18 months. January 2024 saw the contract renewed, and later that year, there was yet another extension.

Afghanistan has had a great deal of success under Jonathan Trott leadership. They played in the T20 World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 2024 and won two historic matches: one against Australia (Super Eight) and one against New Zealand (group stage).

With consecutive ODI series wins against South Africa (2-1) in September 2024 and Bangladesh (3-0) in October 2025 in the United Arab Emirates, they did not let their momentum wane.

Afghanistan’s achievement of finishing in the top eight at the 2023 World Cup to meet the selection requirements for the 2025 Champions Trophy was another noteworthy milestone. They defeated teams like England (69 runs), Pakistan (eight wickets), and Sri Lanka (seven wickets) during their 2023 campaign.

What will happen to Jonathan Trott next?

This was Jonathan Trott first coaching position as head coach of Afghanistan. In the 2021 T20 World Cup, he served as a batting consultant for Scotland before this. It is likely that Trott will play for either domestic teams or international teams.
