After winning the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian players made sure to celebrate despite the controversies surrounding the trophy presentation. In a recent interview, mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy talked about his peculiar “coffee cup” celebration, which quickly gained widespread attention.
The trophy handover after India’s victory caused considerable uncertainty. However, captain Suryakumar Yadav and his colleagues celebrated without the coveted gold. Before feigning to grab an imaginary trophy, the captain even reenacted Rohit Sharma’s well-known slow stroll during the 2024 T20 World Cup final.
According to Varun Chakravarthy, his widely shared Instagram photo of him dozing off with a coffee cup was a playful improvisation. The spinner claimed that after the victory, he had originally intended to take a picture with the trophy itself. He took seven wickets in six games at an average of 20.42 during the tournament.
“I had faith that we would prevail. After we prevailed in the second game, I was certain that we would defeat them in the championship match. So I had everything planned. I had intended to take a picture with the cup beside me while I slept. But I had nothing close to me after the game. Since there was only a coffee cup, I took it. We would win every game, I knew. Our team is the best in the world. On Breakfast with Champions, Varun Chakravarthy declared, “We are champions, but the Cup can be taken away.”
I’ve been an introvert all my life: Varun Chakravarthy
The spinner also disclosed that, despite his introverted nature, he occasionally finds amusement in dark humour. He continued by talking about how writing helped him detach from cricket.
I’ve always been a recluse. Unlike Arshdeep and Nayar, who are gregarious and have a sense of humour, I am not. I have a dark sense of comedy. After practice, I retire to my room and continue writing in order to avoid cricket. Writing is something I adore. It helps me visualise and expresses what’s inside of me. I completely forgot that I was a cricket player at the end, and I had a match the following day,” Varun Chakravarthy remarked.
