During the team’s first practice in Perth prior to the India vs. Australia ODI series, head coach Gautam Gambhir and senior batsman Rohit Sharma were observed engaging in a lengthy conversation.
Following the continuous discussion regarding their working relationships, particularly after Rohit Sharma was replaced as India’s ODI captain by Shubman Gill, the video of them together went viral.
It is noteworthy that Rohit Sharma will play in his first international match since he helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 earlier this year. The selection committee, which was captained by Ajit Agarkar, chose to give Gill the ODI captaincy after the victory. Since then, rumours concerning Rohit Sharma future in white-ball cricket and his compatibility with the new team management have grown.
The seasoned opener has been putting in a lot of effort to make a comeback to international cricket. He last played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2. He received training from Abhishek Nayar in Mumbai prior to departing for Australia. The opener was among the first group of players to get started as soon as they arrived in Perth. Cameras showed him and Gambhir conversing close to the nets during Thursday’s practice. This was the first time the two had interacted on the pitch since the Champions Trophy campaign.

The tour will be a success for those two men: Gambhir
Gambhir discussed the captaincy shift and Rohit’s future in white-ball cricket during the recent India-West Indies Test series.
“Look, I believe it is crucial to remain in the present because the 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. That’s crucial. They are undoubtedly excellent players, and they will return with a wealth of experience in Australia. According to ESPN Cricinfo, Gambhir stated, “I hope those two guys have a successful tour, and more importantly, we will have a successful series as a team.”
Virat Kohli and Rohit are both returning to the ODI setup following a seven-month hiatus. Kohli also batted with Rohit during the team’s practice session. Notably, the Indian team, which will arrive in two groups, will train for a few more matches before to the first ODI in Perth.
