Marnus Labuschagne, an Australian top-order batsman, was removed from the Test team after a string of poor showings. With only six fifties to his credit, Marnus Labuschagne has mostly batted at No. 3 since 2024, amassing just 561 runs in 24 innings at an average of 26.71.
In light of Australia’s loss in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, he was thus excluded from the team for the tour of the West Indies. While Labuschagne was away, Cameron Green took Marnus Labuschagne place at number three, scoring just one fifty in six innings. In the Sheffield Shield, though, the Queensland player seems to have found his form again, amassing four hundreds in five competitive innings, including two consecutive hundreds.
In his most recent century, Marnus Labuschagne hit 159 off 197 balls in Adelaide against South Australia, including 19 fours and a six, before being caught by Wes Agar. Before this, he had scored 105 and 160 runs in the One-Day Cup and Sheffield Shield matches against Tasmania, respectively.
He had previously hammered 130 against Victoria in the same league, but in a recent 50-over match against Western Australia, he only managed two runs. On Day 2, with four wickets left, his most recent knock put Queensland up by 91 runs. The South Africa-born player’s 34th first-class century was also commemorated with this knock.
With the Ashes starting in less than a month, the 31-year-old might have given himself another opportunity to solidify his spot in Australia’s red-ball team.
Marnus Labuschagne total of 4,435 runs at an average of 46.19 in his 58 Test matches includes 23 fifties and 11 hundreds.
If Marnus Labuschagne maintains this strong run of success in domestic cricket, he may be ready to make a return to the Test scene and provide Australia with a tried-and-true match-winner at No. 3 in time for the Ashes. The Optus Stadium in Perth will host Australia’s opening game against England in The Ashes 2025–26 on November 21.
