As India gets ready for their next ODI series against Australia, head coach Gautam Gambhir has made it apparent that he is more concerned with the here and now than with the long-term prospects of veteran stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After India defeated the West Indies 2-0 in the Test series, Gambhir spoke candidly.
Whether Rohit, who will turn 40, and Kohli, who will turn 38, will remain in India’s long-term white-ball plans has been a topic of discussion with the 2027 ODI World Cup still more than two years away. Both players are back for the Australia series after missing out on playing international cricket since India won the Champions Trophy earlier this year.
In an earlier statement, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said that talks about the 2027 World Cup were too remote. Gambhir reiterated the point at the news conference, asking everyone to concentrate on the upcoming tasks. The former opener went on to discuss the significance of the two players’ experience for the Australian tour.
The 2027 World Cup will take place in 2.5 years. Being in the moment is crucial. Both Rohit and Kohli are talented athletes.
“I hope they have a great tour in Australia,” Gambhir remarked.
In preparation for their comeback, Rohit and Kohli have been training hard. Before joining the team, Kohli, who had just won his first IPL championship with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, trained in London for the series. Under the direction of Abhishek Nayar, Rohit, meanwhile, trained at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and then at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Both Rohit and Kohli will join the team before leaving for Australia after arriving in New Delhi on Tuesday morning.
