Sai Sudharsan on Learning Responsibility at No.3

At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on October 14, 2025, after India defeated the West Indies 2-0 in the series, young left-handed batsman Sai Sudharsan said he hoped to play a bigger role for the team. In the two-match assignment, the hosts won by a landslide.

In the five-game England series, Sai Sudharsan acknowledged that he had gained a lot of knowledge and that he had offered some vital resistance. In the second match against the Caribbean team, India chased down a modest 121-run target, with the southpaw scoring 87 in the first innings and 39 in the second. He also contributed significantly in the field, when he damaged his thumb with a fantastic catch at forward short leg.

“I must admit, it feels fantastic. Coming back to India and winning the series is amazing after a good series in which we fought hard (in England). Throughout these five games, I’ve learnt a lot, and I’m eager to build on that while also undoubtedly contributing a little more to the team. “I was very brave to hold my position because I knew he wouldn’t play the sweep shot,” Sai Sudharsan stated on radio following the game. “I was very clear that he wouldn’t sweep (on the catch to dismiss John Campbell in the first innings), and the wicket was low.”

According to Sai Sudharsan, batting at number three inspired him to accept and comprehend his role.

Along with praising Gill’s leadership, he said that Indian skipper Shubman Gill greatly inspires the team.

I had a lot of luck there. Comprehending the role, knowing what a number three needs to do, picking up responsibility, and batting risk-free (based on his future learnings). I’ve played with Shubie (Shubman) a lot, to be honest. I find his captaincy and the way he instills faith in the players to be just fantastic. I’m excited for many more opportunities,” he continued.

India and South Africa will next play a three-match series in red-ball cricket at Eden Gardens in Kolkata starting on November 14. Since the management has chosen to move on from Rohit Sharma, the era of Shubman Gill’s ODI captaincy is about to begin, but first they will be heading to Australia for a white-ball series.
