Gill Breaks Sachin, Kohli Record with New Captaincy Feat

Legendary Indian batsmen Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar set records that Shubman Gill broke, making history. at just his eleventh innings as captain of India, Gill scored his fifth Test century at New Delhi during the current match against the West Indies. In the second session on Saturday, India declared on 518/5, and he was still undefeated at 129.

In terms of innings, he became the second-fastest Indian to reach the milestone with this. Sunil Gavaskar (10 innings) and Alastair Cook (9 innings) were the only captains of their respective teams to reach the milestone in fewer innings. This was also only the third occasion in a single calendar year that an Indian skipper recorded five Test tonnes.

Previously, Kohli, who is no longer playing Test cricket, achieved five Test hundreds in a single year twice. Before Kohli took 18 innings, the Fazilka native became the fastest to accomplish it in his seventh game as skipper. However, as Test captain in 1997, veteran batsman Sachin had amassed four tonnes.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a top-order batsman, and Gill had a terrifying run-out earlier in the day.

With Jaiswal having to leave for 175 off 258, all thoughts of a double-ton were instantly dashed. To reach a fantastic goal, nevertheless, the batsman from Punjab left everything behind him. Gill hit 196 balls, including two spectacular sixes and 16 fours.

After Gill reached his tonne, fortunately for India, Jaiswal was beaming and could be seen cheering the right-handed batter from the dressing room on television. Having played 134.2 overs, the hosts declared victory following Dhruv Jurel’s (44 off 79) wicket. This puts the home team in a strong position to sweep the visitors in the two-game series.
