The renowned Wankhede Stadium will soon have a life-size statue of great Indian and Mumbai batter Dilip Vengsarkar erected by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Following the association’s official statement on Wednesday, October 8, Dilip Vengsarkar, who has also served as the MCA’s vice-president, will receive recognition.
At the MCA’s Apex Council meeting on Wednesday, the decision was resolved. The MCA made their decision public in a formal statement. Speaking on the same topic, President Ajinkya Naik honoured “one of Mumbai’s greatest cricketing icons.”
“The Council has unanimously resolved to install a life-size statue of Dilip Vengsarkar at Wankhede Stadium in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian and Mumbai cricket,” according to the MCA, according to Cricbuzz.
“Honouring Dilip Vengsarkar with a statue at Wankhede is a tribute to one of Mumbai’s greatest cricketing icons, while our support for farmers and maidan clubs underlines MCA’s deep-rooted connection with the community,” Naik said.
The local association intends to further raise the standard of grassroots cricket by establishing academies and first-rate facilities for future generations, according to Abhay Hadap, the body’s secretary.
“Our goal is to build the cricketing ecosystem from the ground up. In order to foster the next generation of cricket players and guarantee that they have access to top-notch facilities, academies will be established around the MMR, and Maidan clubs will receive ground equipment,” Hadap said.
Dilip Vengsarkar, now 69, represented India in 116 Test matches.
In the longest format, he recorded 17 centuries, the most hundreds by an Indian at Lord’s (3), and 35 half-centuries. He played 185 Test innings at a healthy average of 42.13. In his ODI career, Dilip Vengsarkar participated in 129 games for his nation.
In addition to his many accomplishments, he played for India in the 1983 World Cup. The association recently unveiled a new statue of Sunil Gavaskar on the venue’s grounds. Additionally, there is already a statue of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar there.
