During their squad selection meeting for the forthcoming white-ball series against Australia on October 4, the Board of Control for Cricket in India is scheduled to talk about Rohit Sharma‘s future as ODI captain. Rohit is no longer playing Test matches or Twenty20 Internationals.
The meeting’s main focus will be on Rohit Sharma long-term prospects in the 50-over format, both as a player and as captain.
According to Cricbuzz, it is believed that the selection committee intends to speak with Rohit Sharma face-to-face about the matter. A few weeks ago, Rohit passed his fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
By the time the 2027 World Cup is held in South Africa, Rohit Sharma, who is currently 38, would be 40. It is unclear if Rohit will remain in the management’s plans as a player, much less captain, and age appears to be a factor that the BCCI will take into account.
The majority of the players from the 2025 Champions Trophy-winning team, including Rohit and Virat Kohli, are anticipated to be selected for the series’ ODI leg. Additionally, this implies that Shreyas Iyer will probably continue to play for the 50-over team.
But the issue still stands as to whether Iyer will also rejoin the T20I team. There should be spots for Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal because, in contrast to major competitions, the selectors can choose more than 15 players for bilateral series. Both of them were unable to make the 2025 Asia Cup roster, for those who are unaware.
India will meet Australia Down Under in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and five Twenty20 Internationals. The Perth Stadium will host the start of the limited-overs series on Sunday, October 19. Australia has not yet revealed their team either.
